About Dr. Amy Werman

For more than three decades, I've had the privilege of working with adults as a psychotherapist, educator, supervisor, and researcher. Those experiences have deepened my appreciation for the complexity of people's lives and reinforced my belief that meaningful therapy begins with understanding.

I see therapy as an active, collaborative process. Together, we'll explore the experiences, relationships, and patterns that have shaped your life, recognize the strengths you've already developed, and discover new possibilities for moving forward. I'll listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, share observations, and offer honest feedback when I think it may be helpful. While therapy often involves difficult conversations, it doesn't have to be serious every minute. When it feels right, humor can bring perspective, soften self-criticism, and remind us of our shared humanity.

Before returning to full-time private practice, I served as a Senior Lecturer at Columbia University School of Social Work, where I taught psychotherapy, clinical practice, supervision, and research while continuing my clinical work. Today, I bring together more than three decades of experience with ongoing professional development, including advanced training in EMDR and other integrative approaches. I believe therapy should be tailored to the individual—not the individual to a particular therapeutic model.

Outside my practice, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, gardening, birdwatching, cooking, and baking. Those interests help me stay curious, connected, and appreciative of the small moments that enrich everyday life.

Finding the right therapist is a personal decision. If you'd like to learn more about how I work or discuss what brings you to therapy, I invite you to reach out for a consultation. Together, we can decide whether working together feels like the right fit.
